More on Trae Young

Marc Stein: “What I think is really happening here, in the grand scheme — and I already mentioned Ja Morant in Memphis — is that Trae Young is now in a similar position. He’s out in Atlanta, and the Hawks have been winning some games without him. Remember, this summer the two sides could have engaged in contract extension talks, but they didn’t. The Hawks made it clear to Trae Young’s camp that they weren’t interested in an extension before the season. They wanted this season to play out. Around the league, these three guards — LaMelo Ball, Ja Morant, and Trae Young — are being grouped together in the eyes of a lot of executives. Maybe they aren’t available right now, as we speak but these are players teams are anticipating could be available between now and the trade deadline on February 5th. And again, all three of these guys have been All-Stars. YouTube | Nov. 24, 2025

Johnson didn’t miss a beat once he returned to action this season. Along with averaging a career-high in points and assists so far, he was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played from Nov. 10 through Nov. 16, after averaging a near triple-double of 24 points, 12 rebounds, 9.3 assists and 2.5 steals per game as Atlanta went 4-0. Johnson has been leading the way for the Hawks since star guard Trae Young has been sidelined since Oct. 29 with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee. “I’m being more of a leading man and making sure the guys are on the same page with everything,” Johnson said. “That’s the biggest thing. Obviously, I just let my game take care of itself. I don’t try to overdo it. I can’t do the things Trae does. So, I’m not trying to emulate that in any way. I’ve just got to just continue to play my game, continue to be the all-around player that I am. It will take care of everything.” Andscape | Nov. 22, 2025

Ohm Yungmisuk: So Hawks won’t have Trae Young, Kristaps Porzingis, Jalen Johnson, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luke Kennard against the Lakers tonight in second of back to back for Atlanta. x.com | Nov. 8, 2025

As for LaMelo Ball... "If you're asking me if Trae, Ja and LaMelo all came onto the trade market tomorrow, I think LaMelo would have the best market," one executive said. "But that's all hypothetical right now." ESPN | Nov. 7, 2025

Trae Young is on the final guaranteed year of his contract ($46 million) but has a player option next season for $49 million. He is the Hawks' franchise player. They can sign him to an extension at any time, sources told ESPN that those talks haven't progressed. That is likely because it's hard to determine a market value for Young. He's a four-time All-Star and led the league in assists per game (11.6) last season. Over the past four years being built primarily around Young, the Hawks have averaged a modest 40 wins and haven't been over .500 since 2021-22. ESPN | Nov. 7, 2025

On an individual level, nobody controlled the ball more than Jalen Brunson last season. According to GeniusIQ tracking, he led the league with 524 dribbles per game, 8.8 minutes of possession per game and 6.1 seconds per touch. But this season, Brunson's possession numbers have declined across the board; those figures have fallen to 431 dribbles, 7.7 minutes and 4.8 seconds, respectively. A related change is a dramatic decline in Brunson's pick-and-roll frequency. According to GeniusIQ, he was the ball-handler for 55 picks per 100 possessions last season, second-most in the NBA behind Trae Young. But he's only in 12th place among high-volume ball handlers this season, with 43 picks per 100 possessions, as Brown tries to democratize the offensive load. ESPN | Nov. 5, 2025

LeBron James: When did you figure out what you're doing on the floor is transcending a whole generation of players? Stephen Curry: when Trae Young came in the league and that was like the first person who they said was like the next me, even though he's a different player and I knew him when he was in high school, that was like the first time you're like one, I'm getting a little older with these kids that are watching you, who are now emulating their their game after the way that you play or like there's now expectations on said person to be you or play like you. That might be the first time I thought about it or really experienced like what the impact was. But I got that ‘you-ruined-the-game’ question all the time after Mark Jackson said it and now it's kind of tongue-in-cheek just cuz you understand there is an influence and now it's about how you can allow kids to hear the story about the entire journey and not just the finished product.
