Andy Burnham has called for local councils to be given more power and money to tackle climate change . The Greater Manchester Mayor has joined forces with Friends of the Earth to urge the government to give local authorities and city regions the 'tools to do the job'.

Mr Burnham said additional funding and more devolved powers would help Greater Manchester achieve its ambition of becoming carbon neutral by 2038. He said: "Tackling climate change isn't just about protecting the planet – it's a powerful opportunity to build a fairer, greener future for our communities and businesses.

"Locally generated renewable energy, green skills and jobs, warmer homes, cleaner air, and better public transport – these are just some of the benefits we can unlock with the right support.
