CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two people were seriously hurt after a crash late Friday night, shutting down I-77 South in southern Mecklenburg County, according to Medic.
Officials said it unfolded around 10:45 p.m. near the exit to Nations Ford Road when an overhead interstate sign collapsed onto a car, trapping the driver beneath the wreckage.
NCDOT said that a drunk driver crashed into one of the department's sign structures on I-77 South near Exit 3 at Arrowood Road, causing the collapse. NCDOT's Interstate Maintenance Unit worked with the Charlotte Fire Department and other responders to safely remove the damaged section of the sign structure.
"There are no safety issues for the traveling public," NCDOT said in a statement.
