ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin looked to his right and saw an open field fit for a first down scramble.

With top-ranked OSU leading by 15 late in the third quarter against Michigan, Sayin ran for a drive-extending first down, with each footstep leaving a mark on a Michigan Stadium field covered by a thin layer of snow.

Sayin needed no blockers to get the necessary yardage, but he had a guide racing him to the bright orange first-down marker: Ryan Day .

The seventh-year coach sprinted down the visiting sideline, leaving his own trail behind him, as he pointed Sayin in the right direction.

It seemed as though Day, in the midst of coaching in Ohio State’s most important game, was … having fun?
