ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A 47-year-old man died early Saturday after falling into an active fire pit in his backyard at his Stoneville residence, according to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a reported death at 374 Brushy Mountain Road around 12:11 a.m. and found Kenneth “Kenny” Dean Dalton deceased in the backyard with severe burns on his body.

Fire personnel, EMS, and the Rockingham County Fire Marshal’s Office assisted at the scene. Investigators determined Dalton’s injuries were sustained after he fell into an active fire pit.

The county medical examiner responded, and authorities say no foul play is suspected. However, the death remains under investigation pending autopsy results.
