No one was hurt when an e-bike started a fire inside a Cambridge homeless shelter early Sunday.
The small fire was contained to a stairwell after a bicycle’s lithium-ion battery overheated and caught fire while charging.
It happened around 12:40 a.m. at The Bridges shelter at 26 Simcoe St. Firefighters found and put out the blaze after five fire stations responded to an emergency call.
Damage was minor. One person was assessed by paramedics at the scene and released, the Cambridge Fire Department said in a media release.
No residents were displaced, but smoke on the second and third floors forced the temporary evacuation of the shelter. A Grand River Transit bus was brought in to provide shelter while firefighters searched the building, checked ventilation and monitored air quality.
