NEW BRUNSWICK – Lt. Gov.-elect Dr. Dale Caldwell said as the state’s next Secretary of State he will focus much of his energy on election security. And considering his father, the late Rev. Gilbert Caldwell, marched arm-in-arm with Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. across the Deep South for voter rights, it seems like a personal mission.
Caldwell returned Monday morning to his hometown, where he was introduced as the first member of Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill’s cabinet – lieutenant governors serve as heads of a department in New Jersey.
Caldwell and Sherrill said at a news conference that they saw no evidence of voter intimidation in last month’s election, when they surprisingly outpaced the Republican ticket of Jack Ciattarelli and Jim Gannon by nearly 14% of the vote.
Still, Caldwell said,
