GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- A Cedar Springs area woman told police she held a bag over her 2-year-old’s mouth in September, killing her, court records show.

Irene Aiyana Whitehead was arraigned Monday, Dec. 1 in Kent County District court on charges of felony murder and first-degree child abuse.

Whitehead allegedly told detectives, during a Nov. 25 interview, that she “couldn’t take it anymore.”

“What couldn’t you take anymore?” a detective asked.

“Being a parent. Hearing her screaming all the time. The cries,” Whitehead replied.

Police and rescuers were called to the Allan Street home on a report of a child not breathing. Police said life-saving measures were attempted, but the girl died at the scene.

She was identified as 2-year-old Ryleigh Whitehead.
