NORFOLK — Adm. Karl O. Thomas assumed command Monday of U.S. Fleet Forces during a ceremony aboard the USS Harry S. Truman.

Thomas now leads a force of over 100,000 people, 120 ships and submarines 1,500 aircraft, seven task forces and five carrier strike groups. The command is responsible for preparing and organizing naval forces for deployment. It also coordinates homeland defense and civil operations.

Thomas is from Northern Virginia and most recently served as deputy chief of naval operations for Information Warfare (N2N6) and the 69th director of Naval Intelligence. Thomas received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1986. He earned a Master of Science in Information Tech
