PLAINFIELD, New Jersey (WABC) -- The victims of a tragic fire in Plainfield were identified on Monday after the blaze killed two parents and displaced dozens of residents.

The fire broke out on West Front Street around 1 a.m. Sunday.

The victims were identified Monday as Leonel García-Cortez and María Guaya, who are survived by their two children, ages 17 and 11.

As dozens of firefighters tackled the blaze, building superintendent Hugo Fernandez helped the children who lived in the burning apartment escape.

He said the kids didn't have clothes or shoes and it was freezing so he gave them his jacket.

Officials say one victim was found in the entryway of the apartment and the second victim was found inside before they were pronounced dead.

Additionally, two firefighters were injured
