PORTLAND, Maine — Maine is on track to experience its most dangerous year in for pedestrians and bicyclists.
As of late November, there have been 413 crashes involving walkers or bikers statewide, according to the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. 26 of those incidents have been fatal, which puts Maine on pace for its deadliest year since pedestrian and cyclist crash records began in 2003 by the Maine Department of Transportation.
“This is approaching the level of a public health crisis,” said Andrew Zarro, executive director of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. "This is traffic violence."
Zarro pointed to distracted driving and speeding as two of the biggest contributing factors to the crashes.
