A new police commission that now includes the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) and replaces municipal bodies like the city police professional standards branch began operations Monday.

The Police Review Commission will oversee the full police complaint process from receiving complaints to conducting investigations and overseeing disciplinary hearings, a responsibility previously handled by various police forces and agencies. Police agencies will wind down existing investigations and conclude them as soon as possible.

“It’s a new era for policing oversight,” Public Safety and Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis said at a Monday press conference.

Ellis said the new commission will provide greater transparency and accountability for Albertans.
