CLEVELAND — Dec. 1 flips our calendar into a new month, but that's not all: It marks the official start of meteorological winter across Ohio .
While astronomical winter doesn’t arrive until the solstice later this month (Dec. 21), meteorologists divide the seasons into neat three-month blocks for easier data tracking. December, January, and February make up winter, and here in Northeast Ohio, that means we're entering our coldest and snowiest stretch of the year.
But interestingly enough, Dec. 1 itself is usually one of the calmest and clearest days we get all month. Dec. 1 in Cleveland typically features some of the year's clearest weather , though it is a cold start to winter with average highs around 39 degrees Fahrenheit and lows around 30.
