Hamilton police are on pace to set a five-year high for seizures of guns associated with crimes.
Since January, police have taken 288 so-called “crime guns” — defined as any firearm used in the commission of a crime or illegally possessed — off Hamilton streets, already eclipsing the 259 and 160 seized in 2024 and 2023, respectively.
The year-to-date tally nearly matches the five-year high of 289 seizures set in 2022, according to a “Serious and Organized Crime” report presented to Hamilton’s police board on Nov. 27.
“With increasing frequency, we are seeing these guns show up in the hands of criminals to ply their trade,” said Supt. Marty Schulenberg, head of the investigative services division, in an interview.
