ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - An Elkhart mother and her three newly adopted sons are rebuilding their lives after their home was destroyed in a fire on Black Friday.
Carla Darr, a former educator at Mary Daly Elementary School and volleyball coach, escaped the house fire with her three sons King, KJ and Ky. The family made it out safely with only the clothes on their backs.
“Their biggest concern was making sure that I was out,” Darr said. “They take care of me. They look after me and I look after them. And they got themselves out. I tried to use a fire extinguisher to put the fire out and they’re like, ‘No, mama, you have to get outside, like, don’t do that.’ That’s what the firemen do and so they knew what to do and they didn’t panic. They stayed calm.”
