CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - An alleged impaired driver caused a large overhead sign to fall onto I-77 Friday night, where it partially crushed an innocent vehicle, a spokesperson for the North Carolina Department of Transportation said.

Two people were seriously hurt in the incident, according to the Charlotte Fire Department, which shared photos of the incident.

The alleged drunk driver drove into the poles holding the sign over the interstate between Nations Ford Road and Arrowood Road, shortly before the sign collapsed, the North Carolina Department of Transportation said.
