Michigan State moved quickly to secure its new football coach.
A little more than 24 hours after Jonathan Smith was fired, the Spartans on Monday announced former longtime Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald as their choice to lead the program.
“Today marks the beginning of a new era for Michigan State football,” athletic director J Batt said in a press release. “Pat Fitzgerald is widely recognized as an exceptional football coach, whose teams play with extreme toughness and grit, demonstrate continual improvement and maximize potential.
