(Bloomberg/Nick Turner) — Apple Inc. artificial intelligence head John Giannandrea plans to step down from the job, ending a challenging stint at the iPhone maker.

Giannandrea, who held the role of senior vice president for machine learning and AI strategy, will remain an adviser and retire entirely from the company in the spring, Apple said in a statement Monday.

AI researcher Amar Subramanya, meanwhile, has joined Apple as vice president of artificial intelligence, the company said. He will report to software chief Craig Federighi and oversee Apple foundation models, machine learning research, and AI safety and evaluation.

Subramanya spent 16 years at Alphabet Inc.’s Google and most recently served as Microsoft Corp.’s corporate vice president of AI.
