DULUTH — Staff at the Great Lakes Aquarium broke some difficult news Monday: Bogey, an injured bald eagle who has greeted local visitors to the facility for 25 years, is dead.

His keepers made the difficult decision to euthanize Bogey on Friday, after he lost interest in food and found it increasingly difficult to move about his exhibit space.

The popular bird had been in significant decline for a few weeks, according to Jay Walker, executive director of the aquarium. A veterinarian was called in to examine Bogey and came back with the assessment that his condition was untreatable.

“It was a very difficult decision, because you develop a lot of emotions when you care for an animal that long,” said Allison Iacone, the aquarium’s communications director. “But we were concerned about Bogey
