MADISON (WKOW) -- In 2014, Abdullah Ameen landed in Madison, Wisconsin. It was his first time in the United States, coming from Afghanistan as a refugee.

For Ameen, this meant a newfound sense of safety for himself and his family. But now, for thousands of refugees, that opportunity is getting stripped away.

"We're going to halt the whole immigration process, the whole immigration system because of just one person? I think that's not fair from my point of view," said Ameen.

The Trump administration halted all visa and asylum processing for Afghan refugees after two national guardsmen were shot last week. Officials said the suspect is an Afghan national who came to the U.S. legally in 2021.
