The new Bremer Avenue bridge officially opened to traffic on Wednesday, Nov. 26. The first vehicle to cross it—at 11:27 a.m.—was the Waverly fire truck that had been parked on the east side of the river, in case of any fire while the bridge was out.
When the fire truck rejoined the rest of the Waverly fleet at the west-side fire station, Waverly Fire/Rescue had a “Welcome back” cake and balloons to mark the occasion.
“The long-awaited time has come,” the group said in a Facebook post about the fire truck returning to the fire station. “The bridge is open and everything is back in one station.”
Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Miller had discussed the situation when the bridge closed for replacement Aug. 5, 2024. He noted that 12 firefighters live on the east side of the river, and he, himself
