The York County Regional Police Department sent out a warning Monday about a recent scam involving suspect(s) posing as the “Prevent Cancer Foundation,” utilizing checks for several thousand dollars made out to citizens and dispersed by Priority or Certified mail to make it seem more legitimate.
Per the Crimewatch, a letter is attached asking to call a phone number after depositing a check, and then how to disperse funds back to the suspect(s). (typically by purchasing gift cards and giving the information back to the caller)
An online search found that other U.S. police departments are encountering this scam, attempted with the same cover letter, attempting to prey on people’s compassion for cancer patients during the holiday season, the department said.
