Sgt. Erik LeVasseur of the Port St. Lucie Police Department was taken to an area hospital after being shot on Monday while investigating a disturbance, the police department said.
According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department Chief Leo Niemczyk, six officers responded to the 11000 block of SW Lake Park Drive for a reported disturbance.
During a news conference, Niemczyk said officers were met by a man holding an assault rifle.
Gunfire was exchanged, and Sgt. Levasseur was shot in the face, Niemczyk said.
The suspect was fatally wounded. No other officers were injured.
Niemczyk said that Levasseur is in surgery.
