One of the longest-tenured high school football coaches in the Shore Conference stepped down on Monday after guiding his team to one of the best seasons in program history.
Walt Currie confirmed to NJ Advance Media that he tendered his resignation as head coach at Brick Memorial after 19 seasons leading the Mustangs. He informed the players of his decision in a meeting on Monday afternoon.
“It was not an easy decision and it’s taken me a while to understand the why and the when,” Currie said. “As for why, the analogy I’ve been using to explain to people is this: It’s like when a parent is teaching their kid how to ride a bike. You take the training wheels off but you’re still holding onto the seat, even though they can ride on their own. It’s time for me to let go of the bike.”
