CLEVELAND, Ohio -- With Christmas and New Year’s celebrations approaching, the Cleveland Animal Protective League is reminding families to be extra cautious as homes fill with decorations, rich foods and seasonal scents.
Veterinary clinics often see a spike in preventable emergencies this time of year, many caused by curious pets getting into new and tempting holiday items.
Holiday décor is one of the biggest risks.
Sharon Harvey, president and CEO of the Cleveland APL, said clinics regularly treat pets who swallow dangerous decorations.
“Around the holidays, the most commonly seen emergencies at veterinary clinics related to pets is ingesting holiday décor,” Harvey said.
“Tinsel, ribbon, ornament hooks, string lights and small ornaments are some of the biggest culprits.
