CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - With winter weather on the way in West Virginia, crews are preparing for snow on the roads near Charleston.
“We get our team prepared, go to two 12-hour shifts as soon as we see bad weather coming in,” said Stefen White, maintenance manager for the Department of Transportation’s District One.
When snow is expected, the Division of Highways hits the ground running by pretreating the interstate with a mixture of beet juice and salt. The state began using salt brine last year and crews prioritize bridges, hills and curves.
“It’s got a tacky, sticky substance to it and it sticks to the road, and then of course once we do start salting the roads that will help the salt lay on the road and not be blown away,” White said.
He said if snow falls, trucks will be out sp
