LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - For months now, JCPS leaders have been working through what they’re calling a budget crisis, amid a $188 million deficit.

Part of their solution is a proposal to close and consolidate some schools, which has caused pushback from the communities it would impact.

On Monday, JCPS leaders hosted the first of three community forums to take feedback on the proposal.

Staff said it’s not something they want to do, or take lightly, but the consolidation plans on the table are necessary to ensure the quality of education for every JCPS student.

But critics of the plan argue staff are thinking more about the money and less about the students and families they are impacting.

“It’s about time people started thinking about the children instead of money,” one attendee said
