This year, unprecedented mid-decade redistricting was kicked off by Republican Governor Greg Abbott of Texas forcing a new racially gerrymandered map through the legislature. This was done at the behest of President Donald Trump , who wants to pick up five congressional seats in the state to increase Republicans’ odds of keeping the House. Texas hasn’t acted alone — Missouri and North Carolina have also redistricted for two more Republican-leaning seats, and more states are being pressured to follow suit . Simply put, Trump is ordering states with Republican control to redistrict in order to eliminate voters holding him accountable in the midterm elections.
