An ex-Premier League and England footballer has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape.

The Sun reports that the former footballing star was arrested at Stansted Airport. He was stopped at a passport control point in the airport.

It is understood that his details showed that he was wanted by police over a non-recent allegation of attempted rape reported by a former partner. Border Force guards stopped him before he could board his flight on Sunday night it is claimed.

Officers from Essex Police travelled to Stansted Airport to arrest the suspect. He was then taken to a local police station where his fingerprints, DNA sample and mugshot were taken.
