The Chancellor has suffered another blow as the Treasury watchdog slammed misleading briefings about the state of Britain’s finances ahead of her Budget.
Senior officials from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) said they had to “set the record straight” on what forecasts Rachel Reeves was given following “unhelpful” information appearing in the media.
Ms Reeves is under mounting pressure over last week’s Budget, with accusations that she misled voters over the state of the public finances ahead of the event, while businesses have criticised it for failing to include measures to boost growth.
Giving evidence to the Treasury Select Committee on Tuesday, after OBR chief Richard Hughes quit last night, Professor David Miles said the OBR had raised Budget leaks with Treasury staff.
