BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - If you are asking Santa to bring you a car for Christmas, there are a few things to consider in today’s car-buying market. The differences between buying a new car and a used car used to be more apparent than they are today.

CARFAX shares that the supply of used cars is well below the demand, due in large part to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even just five years ago, cars were not being produced around the time of the pandemic, like they are now. Thus, a four- to five-year-old used car is not nearly as accessible and affordable as it once was.

CARFAX also put together this study , saying consumers are spending an average of $1,300 more on used cars compared to a year and a half ago, when the price gap between a 2025 model and a 2023 model was close in cost.
