ON THIS DAY IN 1900 , the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “WASHINGTON, DEC. 1 — An expanded White House proportionate to the needs of an expanded republic will, it is safe to predict, be one of the monuments left by the national capital centennial of December 12. A new movement to improve the presidential abode has been closely linked with the centennial enterprise, almost from its start. Congress offered its first encouragement in May by appropriating $6,000 for the preliminary architectural work. A plaster model showing the proposed ‘greater White House’ in miniature, and a series of drawings, showing its construction details, are fast growing to completion.
