Starting next year, the Transportation Security Administration will begin charging air travelers a fee for not having Real ID compliant identification when flying.
On Monday, the agency announced that flyers without compliant identification will pay a $45 fee for identity verification at security checkpoints.
The fee will go toward an identity verification program called TSA Confirm.ID . The agency said the charge ensures the program’s costs come from travelers, not taxpayers.
The change will go into effect beginning Feb. 1, 2026, according to a press release from the TSA .
Besides Real ID-compliant driver’s licenses, travelers can also use U.S. and foreign-issued passports, permanent resident cards, and state-issued enhanced ID cards to avoid paying the $45 fee.
