A local election in Virginia has drawn attention not for political hostility or sharp attacks but for the rare civility and mutual admiration between two candidates on opposite sides of a competitive race. In Surry County, a 19-year-old recent high school graduate challenged an incumbent Conservative for a seat on the Surry County Board of Supervisors.

The twist was that the incumbent happened to be his former civics teacher. Cameran Drew, who graduated from Surry County High School in 2024, made the bold decision to run for office against Kenneth Bell, the teacher he admired deeply.
