MADISON, Wis. (Northern News Now) - Former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes announced Tuesday his candidacy for Wisconsin governor.

The Democrat previously served in the state assembly and narrowly lost his bid for the U.S. Senate in 2022.

According to his campaign video , Barnes says affordability and standing up to Trump are his top priorities.

Barnes joins a crowded democratic primary, with seven other democrats running for the seat.

They’ll face off in next year’s August primary election.

The bid comes after Governor Tony Evers announced he will not seek a third term.
