More than a year after the provincial government completed an in-depth review of the Manitoba Municipal Board, a Springfield resident and longtime municipal-governance advocate says one fundamental democratic gap remains unaddressed: citizens still have no way to recall an elected municipal official between elections.
In a recent release, Edwin Giesbrecht, a resident of the RM of Springfield, argues the province’s ongoing efforts to modernize the Manitoba Municipal Board (MMB), including improved digital access, publishing decisions online, and assigning staff to manage modernization, are welcome steps, but fall short of addressing the deeper accountability problem facing municipalities.
