A powerful winter storm is pounding southcentral Pennsylvania, triggering widespread speed reductions across major highways, PennDOT announced on Tuesday, Dec. 2.
Drivers in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties will see speed limits temporarily reduced to 45 mph as snow and ice continue to build across the region, according to the release issued at 11 a.m.
The restrictions impact nearly every major roadway in District 8, including:
Interstate 81 from the Maryland line to the district line.
- Interstate 78, entire length.
- Interstate 83, entire length.
- Interstate 283, entire length.
- PA 581, entire length.
- US 15, entire length.
- US 11 from Duncannon north to the district line.
- PA 283, entire length.
- US 30 from PA 24 to PA 462.
- US 22 from I-81 to Millerstown.
- US 222, entire length.
Commercial vehicles not otherwise restricted must move into the right lane on these roadways, PennDOT said.
Crews have been treating roadways throughout the storm, but drivers should expect snow-covered and icy conditions. The department emphasized that its goal is to keep roads passable—not completely clear—until the storm ends and plow teams can safely finish clearing.
PennDOT urged drivers to avoid unnecessary travel.
PennDOT also reminded motorists to give plow trucks extra room and never attempt to pass them while they are spreading materials. Drivers are encouraged to pack an emergency kit with food, water, warm clothes, a small shovel, and other essential items, including supplies for pets or children.
