House Republicans’ redistricting bill carries an unusual provision that would limit courts from temporarily blocking its enactment, which one legal expert said could be an unconstitutional attempt to stifle a coequal branch of government.
The redistricting bill which would drastically improve Republicans’ chances of winning all nine of Indiana's U.S. House seats, contains language stating “a temporary restraining order may not be sought or issued" by courts and further limits lower courts' influence over interpreting the bill, if it were to become law.
If the legislation is passed, the wording would limit the ability of redistricting opponents to fight against the new map in court and seek judicial relief, according to opponents.
