The Connecticut grandfather, 70, who was shot dead along with his brother in a New York hunting cabin, is being remembered for his big laugh and sharp sense of humor.
Mark D. Thompson, of Canterbury, was shot to death on Nov. 23 in the tiny town of Allen, New York, about an hour south of Rochester. Thompson was on a hunting trip with his brothers, David E. Thompson, 69, of Port Charlotte, Florida, and their younger brother, Scot D. Thompson, 65, of Englewood, Florida.
Police say the youngest brother shot the older two before driving off in one of their vehicles. He was captured soon after and charged with their killings, police said.
Mark Thompson grew up in Hunt, New York, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1972, serving as a cook aboard the USS George C. Marshall and USS Nautilus submarines, his obituary said. He received his nursing degree after leaving the service and later started his own construction company, using the skills to help family and friends.
"Family and friends will remember Mark for his loud and boisterous humor, strong opinions, delicious cooking, and his hair," his family said. "His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him."
Thompson leaves behind two adult children and multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The love of his life, Gail Jacobsen, his wife of nearly five decades, also survives him.
His family has created a GoFundMe to help her as she adjusts to life without the man she married in 1977.
"Mark was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose loss has devastated our family," his daughter-in-law wrote in the GoFundMe. "Any support to help with funeral expenses and bills during this heartbreaking time means so much."
The campaign has raised nearly $8,000 toward its $20,000 goal.
A memorial for Thompson is scheduled for 11 a.m. Dec. 12 at the Sprague Rod & Gun Club in Baltic.
