WATERBURY, CT (WFSB) - The first winter storm of the season arrived in Waterbury on Tuesday morning.
It wasn’t anticipated to be the biggest; however, it was a chance for cities and towns to test out their equipment and get the roads ready for future storms.
For several hours on Tuesday morning, more than two dozen trucks have been loaded up with salt and sand and pre-treating the hilly roads around Waterbury.
A base-layer of sand had yet to be applied to city streets. Officials said that usually, it accumulates throughout winter and adds better traction for commuters and school buses.
Although towns nearby like Wolcott, Watertown and Plymouth cancelled school, children were sent to class in Waterbury.
It was a decision in which the city’s public works department had a hand.
