Police have confirmed it is treating a number of incidents of cars being set alight in a County Durham town as arson.

As previously reported by The Northern Echo , six vehicles have been torched in two weeks on Dalton Avenue and nearby streets in Seaham.

Some residents told the Echo how their cars were their "lifeline" to get to work. A minibus, used to transport children with special needs, was also torched.

Seaham and Easington Police said today it is investigating the fires as arson attacks.

Seaham Neighbourhood Inspector Tom Teague said: "We are treating these incidents as arson and have deployed extra officers to the area to carry out a number of enquiries.
