MOBILE, Ala. ( WALA ) - Ann Bedsole, a trailblazer in Alabama politics, has died at 95.

A longtime Mobile resident, she made history as the first Republican woman in the Alabama House of Representatives and the first woman in the Alabama Senate. She served until 1995.

Beyond politics, Bedsole co-founded the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science and championed historic preservation in Mobile.

She also wrote an autobiography called “Leave Your Footprint.”

Her book title proved prophetic. She certainly left her footprint on Alabama politics and education.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized.
