A fast-moving fire tore through a Virginia home Monday evening, sending heavy flames bursting from the back of the house as firefighters rushed in with ladders and hose lines.
Crews were called around 5:15 p.m. on December 1 to the 4700 block of Twinbrook Road in the Kings Park West area, where firefighters arrived to find smoke and fire showing from the rear of the home, according to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.
The house was under renovation and no one was inside, fire officials said. A neighbor discovered the fire and called 911.
Firefighters knocked down the flames and searched the structure. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.
Investigators determined the fire started outside the home, in discarded construction material behind the structure. According to FCFRD, the fire was accidental and caused by the improperly discarded smoking materials.
Damage is estimated at $108,600, officials said.
The fire sent a column of smoke into the night sky as crews worked from ladders and the backyard to get it under control. The rear of the home was left charred and partially collapsed.
The fire remains under investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshal.
