ATHENS, Ga. — A woman was shot at an Athens dental office early Monday morning and a 74-year-old man is under arrest, police said.

A release by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department stated officers responded to a report of gunshots just after 6:30 a.m. at McRae Family Dental on Baxter Street. Upon arrival officers found a "female in a business who sustained gunshot wounds."

She was taken to a local hospital for treatment, ACCPD said.

The department identified the suspect as 74-year-old Carl Clark; they said he was charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.

The dental office would not yet have been open at the time of the incident, according to published operating hours, and it's unclear precisely why the victim and suspect were there
