ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - A Syracuse man is dead after police say he fell through the ice on a pond in Elkhart County while attempting to rescue his dog.

Police say it happened Monday around 4 p.m. at a private pond in the 70000 block of County Road 29.

According to police, 69-year-old Phillip Hoover fell into the pond as he attempted to rescue his dog that had fallen through the ice.

Emergency crews were able to recover Hoover from the pond and take him to the hospital, where he later died. Police say his death was the result of an accidental drowning.

Emergency crews were also able to rescue the dog, who police say survived and had no apparent signs of injury.

The drowning remains under investigation by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, the Indiana DNR and the Elkhart County
