WASHINGTON — The man authorities believe shot two West Virginia National Guard members in an ambush attack near the White House made his first court appearance on Tuesday. He is charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of assault in the shooting.

Rahmanullah Lakanwal , 29, appeared virtually in court from his hospital bed on Tuesday. He was reportedly injured in the confrontation.

Lakanwal spoke to the court with the help of a Pashto interpreter. The interpreter made sure Lakanwal understood the charges he faces and his rights. Lawyers representing Lakanwal entered a plea of not guilty to all charges.
