The suspect in last week's shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., has been charged with murder and assault with intent to kill while armed. Rahmanullah Lakanwal , 29, was ordered held without bond.

Lakanwal appeared virtually from a D.C. hospital, where he remains after being shot by law enforcement after shooting the two National Guard members, Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom and Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe . Beckstrom, 20, died of her injuries, and Wolfe remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The magistrate judge overseeing Tuesday's initial appearance said that the government's case was "exceedingly strong."
