Clark County officials are reminding residents to keep flammable items at least 3 feet away from heating equipment and to carry emergency kits in their vehicles as the season’s first freeze warning has been issued for Moapa Valley, Mesquite and surrounding areas.

“Freezing temperatures in Southern Nevada can take people by surprise this time of year,” Brian O’Neal, the Clark County deputy fire chief, said in a statement.

Temperatures of 32 degrees or below can damage vegetation, cause pipes to burst and lead to frostbite and hypothermia, officials warned in an advisory. Temperatures dipped into the 30s on Monday night in Las Vegas; a low of 42 degrees is expected Tuesday.

The county recommends wrapping exposed pipes with insulation or newspaper covered in plastic.
