A woman from Westchester County remembered for her deep compassion, love for animals, and gentle presence with children died following a battle with cancer.

Jodi Ann Spear, who grew up in Mount Vernon and later lived in Yonkers and New Rochelle, died on Monday, Nov. 24, at the age of 56, according to her obituary.

Spear spent her life caring for others—whether through her work in the City School District of New Rochelle or her dedication to dog rescue organizations, her obituary said.

Born on Jan. 2, 1969, to Joseph and Peggy Spear, she grew up with her younger brother, Philip, forming friendships in Mount Vernon that lasted decades. Family and friends said those relationships reflected her warm, genuine spirit.

Spear became a familiar face in New Rochelle as a longtime school bus aide, where she was known for her kindness and patience with the children she tended to each day. Students often greeted her with, “We love you, Miss Jodi!”, a testament, her family said, to the comfort and security she brought to young riders.

She was equally devoted to animals. A proud “dog mom,” she adored her companions Bubbles, Coco, and Missy-Lu, spending countless hours at dog parks around Westchester and volunteering her time and resources to rescue groups. She was known for giving generously to shelters and supporting dogs in need.

Spear’s battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer was shared through a GoFundMe created by her close friend, Caryn Magno, who wrote that Spear faced her illness with her beloved dog Bubbles by her side. The fundraiser had described her ongoing hospital stays, medical challenges, and financial strain as she continued fighting the disease with determination.

Her family said she will be remembered for “boundless compassion” and a remarkable ability to make people feel seen, valued, and appreciated.

She is survived by her mother, Peggy; her brother, Philip, and his wife, Jennifer; her nephews, Jonathan and Caleb; extended family members; and many friends whose lives were brightened by her generosity and friendship.

A Celebration of Life will be held later in December at her church, with details to be shared privately.
