FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - Kentucky road crews deployed new environmentally friendly tools to combat the second snowfall of the season on Tuesday.

Kentucky State Police responded to over 500 calls since midnight, with more than two dozen drivers needing assistance.

Gov. Andy Beshear said the snow caused several crashes and roadway shutdowns across the state.

“Most have not slept to have our roads in the very best shape that they can be in this morning,” Beshear said.

New de-icing product tested

Crews are using a new mixture of salt brine and a de-sugared beet byproduct to fight ice this season, replacing their normal calcium chloride treatment.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials said the new product is more environmentally friendly while maintaining the same effectiveness.
